DeEtta Brown, a mother of two, opened her home to neighbors and friends, hosting outdoor activities with toys, games and food for the kids. “Just to know these children were safe, happy and had full bellies brought a smile to my face,” she says. When she became a grandmother, she continued to provide wholesome, safe activities for neighborhood children becoming a resource for Central’s young parents. She wanted to do something to counteract youth violence in the neighborhood, so she created a club that provides after-school programs, and weekend educational and recreational activities. In addition to her work with Akidz Club, DeEtta has worked with various other community initiatives.
