Cleveland residents and business owners are invited to celebrate one year of community accomplishments at the PNC Fairfax Connection, the free resource center located at E. 83rd and Carnegie, at an open house on Saturday, September 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Since its debut in September 2012, the center has welcomed more than 1,000 registered members and thousands of visitors who regularly come to take advantage of educational programming and innovative technology. Designed with the community’s needs in mind, PNC Fairfax Connection serves as an intersection of technology and people, offering training and classes to help people connect to learning resources, jobs and educational opportunities.
In just one year, the center has offered more than 50 programs through partnerships with more than 40 local organizations, trained dozens seniors on computers and hosted hundreds of children for a variety of hands-on activities. Job seekers have found new employment and honed their professional skills, preschoolers have become better prepared for kindergarten, small business owners have strengthened their business plans, seniors have been embraced email and the Internet, families have come together for cooking classes and game nights and teenagers have mastered video production.
“Every day we hear stories from people who have turned an experience or program at the center into a personal success,” says Collette Appolito, executive director of PNC Fairfax Connection. “We continually look for new ways to interact with our friends and neighbors, evolving the center’s offerings to meet their needs, help achieve their goals and forge new connections with each other and their community.”
A Welcoming Place Where All Ages Can Have Fun, Learn and Make New Connections
“When I first walked in the front doors, it felt like home,” says Vernita Whittenberg, a Fairfax resident and grandmother of four who regularly brings her family to the center. “I schedule my life, my waking hours, by the PNC Fairfax Connection calendar because it’s all about the grandkids and exposing them to things and getting them involved.”
Whittenberg also attests to the role the center has played in forging new connections with her neighbors. “There were people living right next door and across the street from me, but I really didn’t know them. Through the center, we’re now connected. And that’s why I say this is a great name: PNC Fairfax Connection.”
A Community Celebration to Highlight Fairfax Achievement
PNC invites the community to a family-friendly celebration for all ages providing visitors a “Passport to Achievement” as they participate in activities that showcase the intergenerational resources available at PNC Fairfax Connection. The event will feature refreshments and giveaways, and thanks to the PNC Grow Up Great program, younger guests will enjoy the PNC Mobile Learning Adventure activity tent. In addition, because of PNC’s sponsorship of Sesame Street™, there will also be a special guest appearance by Walkaround Elmo.
