Funding Opportunities

Listed below are potential funding sources for Neighborhood Connections grantees.

The Cityworks Neighborhood Matching Grant Program
offers funding up to $3,000 to community-based organizations for neighborhood improvement and community projects. Awardees will be responsible for matching contributions, which may be cash, volunteer labor, donated professional services, donated materials or supplies, and/or borrowed equipment. 

The Civic Innovation Lab
offers funding of up to $30,000 to individuals with ideas that have the potential to improve Greater Cleveland. Just as important, they provide mentors to support winning ideas. Founded in October 2003, the Civic Innovation Lab is a project funded by The Cleveland Foundation. Each year, the Lab funds eight to ten initiatives that have the potential to strengthen the economy and enhance the quality of life in Greater Cleveland.

The Cleveland Colectivo 
welcomes individuals, new businesses, and community projects to participate. Grant amounts will range between $500 and $5,000, based on the number of projects selected.


Gardening for Greenbacks
Grants are available up to $3,000 for market gardeners in the City of Cleveland. These grants are sponsored by the City of Cleveland's Department of Economic Development in partnership with the Cleveland Department of Public Health, the New Agrarian Center, The Ohio State University Extension, and Case Western Reserve University. Gardening for Greenbacks brochure


The Ohio Arts Council
is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically. They offer a host of community programs that offer training and funds for small and emerging arts organizations. The programs include Art Access, Arts InnovationCapacity Building, and the Building Cultural Diversity Initiative.


Universal Health Care Action Networks of Ohio (UHCAN Ohio)
requests proposals from consumer-based organizations in targeted locations around Ohio (see below for locations) to build a grassroots network advocating for health care reform.  These networks are part of a statewide effort to build a united consumer voice on the need for major health care reform at the state level. This statewide effort is being led by Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage, a coalition of consumer based organizations focused on securing health care for all Ohioans. Grants will range in size from $1,000 to $10,000. Up to nine grants will be awarded.  Download the attached document for more specific information.

UHCAN Request for Proposals


The United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland has financially assisted many non-profit organizations in the Greater Cleveland area. An important part of the philosophy is to insure that non-profit charitable organizations serving the poor, Black, and other minorities receive an equitable share of the charitable dollars. United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland funds over 80 non-profit agencies annually.

Training Opportunities

Listed below are training opportunities for Neighborhood Connections grantees.

Community Organizing Basic Training
is offered yearly for community organizers in Greater Cleveland. It is usually held each year in the fall and offers basic training in outreach, issue identification, community building, direct action organizing and more. Contact CNDC at 216.928.8100 to find out when the next training session will be held.

Connecting Circles
is a training, technical assistance and support group series for a selected group of Neighborhood Connections grantees to be facilitated by organizational development consultant Janus Small.  Each session in the six-part series includes a training component, an in-depth question/answer session based on participants’ current needs, and collective development of individualized action lists for participants for the month ahead.  Training component topics for the series: Building and Engaging your Board, Getting the Word Out: Knowing and Developing Your Audience, Volunteer Team Development and Management, Fundraising Basics, and Effective Planning for your Organization. The Foundation Center - Cleveland
offers free introductory classes on proposal writing, grant seeking, fundraising planning and more. They also offer more indepth, fee-based classes on fundraising and have a reference library to research potential funders.

The KeyBank Small Non-Profit Series

Neighborhood Leadership Institute
exists to develop grassroots leadership that will contribute to rebuilding the bonds of community and improving the quality of life for neighborhood residents throughout the Greater Cleveland area.

The Ohio State University Extension
offers a host of training and technical assistance programs in Cuyahoga County. Services include training in gardening, market gardening, health and nutrition, and more. Call 216.429.8200 for more information.

Project Access
is a collaborative project of The Cleveland Foundation and the Board of County Commissioners. It is a comprehensive, multifaceted capacity building program designed to strengthen the organizational capacity and effectiveness of faith-based community organizations. 

The Treu-Mart Youth Development Fellowship Program
at the Mandel Center provides support and professional development for those who work with youth during non-school hours.

Youth Philanthropy and Service (YPS) at the Mandel Center
at Case Western develops and promotes leadership and personal involvement by youth in the giving of time, treasure, and talent to their community. YPS provides resources and support for adults implementing K-12 youth service and philanthropy programs within their schools and organizations. Services include training, networking, knowledge dissemination, and professional support.
